Fifth Drop

— The Veiled House —

Through the investigation of the Memento Photographs,
Ren and Rui learn of a folklorist who had relocated to Mt. Hikami.

The folklorist, "Keishi Watarai."
There might be some clues left behind in the documents he left.

As their investigation progresses,
they discover a videotape seemingly connected to the folklorist.

Ren thinks to himself that Fuyuhi, who already committed suicide, and Rui, who almost hanged herself, both witnessed a spirit resembling a shrine maiden.
He heard Yuri saw it too. Does the black casket regarding Haruka have anything to do with Mt. Hikami's past?
Investigating Keishi Watarai, who once lived here... might reveal something.

He takes the videotape labeled "The Veiled House" from the desk and watches it, obtaining the document Regarding the "Veiled House" Videotape, right before the phone begins ringing...

He answers the phone on the side table by the door; it is his friend Kazuya Sakaki calling to talk about his upcoming marriage.
Midway through, the call cuts out due to heavy static noise.

On the floor behind the central sofa, he collects the document Rui's Diary 2.

From the footage of The Veiled House, he realizes that passing through the Doll Shrine that Yuri mentioned into the underground cavern offers a way to connect to the Veiled House. Thus, he heads out to the Doll Shrine with Rui.

Location: Doll Shrine

Rui: 'Mr. Sakaki was the one looking for the Memento Photographs with you, right, Master? He vanished without a trace afterward, so knowing he's still alive is quite a relief.'

Entering the shrine through the back door and reaching the Corridor of Returned Spirits, Rui suddenly wanders off toward the Front Shrine.
In the Front Shrine, Rui encounters the white-haired girl whom Yuri had also met.

White-haired Girl: 'Brother, don't talk to me, because I am dead right now.'
Rui: 'Brother?'
White-haired Girl: 'Brother is big sister, right?'
Rui: 'I am your brother.'
White-haired Girl suddenly springs up and screams: 'Liar!'
Rui: 'I... I am...'
The white-haired girl picks up the doll beside her and says: 'Let's play. This person is your doll...'
Suddenly, the white-haired girl declares: 'No, become a doll yourself.'

Shifting back to Ren Hojo

Discovering that Rui has gone missing, Ren turns back to search the Front Shrine, where he encounters three child phantoms. They tell Ren: 'This game is about finding your bride!' before running away.

Ren: 'My bride?'
Ren decides he must locate Rui first.

Returning to the Corridor of Returned Spirits and opening the door to the Main Shrine corridor, he heads left to the end. Hearing children's voices near the door, he enters the Storehouse.
Using the camera lens to peer through a Psychic Vision, he successfully finds the first child.

Heading back to the Main Shrine corridor (South) and turning right toward the flooded corner, he opens the door into the Workshop upon hearing a child's voice.
Opening the upper door into the Workshop Closet and looking through the camera's Psychic Vision reveals the second child.
Turning back into the workshop, he spots a specter: Fleeing Child.

Returning to the corridor and entering the flooded Main Shrine, he takes the left door into the Doll Corridor, picking up the document Doll Shrine Record 4 on the floor of the left passage at the end.

Entering the West Storehouse, he walks to the left side of the Main Shrine corridor (West). Approaching a pit in the floor, he hears a child's voice.
Using the camera's Psychic Vision reveals the third child, followed by the appearance of a running specter: Fleeing Child.

After finding all three child phantoms, a document materializes on the floor of the flooded Main Shrine; he approaches to collect Rui's Diary 3.

Using this diary as a token to search for Rui's traces, he follows the traces from the Workshop to a small room at the eastern end of the Main Shrine corridor. Peer through the camera's Psychic Vision to discover Rui.

Ren: 'Rui! Are you alright?'
Rui: 'Master... you actually came for me.'
Ren: 'Are you hurt?'
Rui: 'No.'
The two resume their search for The Veiled House, intending to return to the Front Shrine to locate the cavern entrance.

Heading from the eastern end of the Main Shrine corridor through the East Storehouse to the Northern Corridor, they follow the path down to the flooded basement storage, discovering the document Doll Shrine Record 2.

Returning to the Main Shrine corridor (East) and approaching the Workshop door, he spots a specter: Fleeing Child.

Following it through the Workshop to the Southern Corridor, he sees the specter dart into the Corridor of Returned Spirits: Fleeing Child.

Following it into the Corridor of Returned Spirits, they are ambushed by the hostile spirit Yomi-Bound.

Upon defeating him, they make their way back to the Front Shrine.
Seeing the white-haired girl, Ren realizes with a shock that she is the exact same girl who torments him in his nightmares.

The white-haired girl slowly approaches Ren and asks: 'Where is my token?'

Ren stands frozen, unable to utter a word...
The white-haired girl slowly turns to leave, then suddenly looks back: 'Have you gone and lost my token?'
Before vanishing, she leaves behind a final phrase: 'And we made a promise...' before disappearing completely.

Ren finds the cavern entrance beneath the right side of the altar display table and steps down into the Womb Cavern.

Location: Womb Cavern

Rui: 'Master, I've always been waiting for the person who would choose me. I... have always been waiting for you, Master.'

Ren: 'What are you talking about?'
Rui: 'It's nothing, I'm sorry. But... I think I understand now.
Though I... still don't understand that child... she is also waiting for the person holding the token.'

Following the path to the chamber of the submerged caskets at the end (where Haruka was rescued previously), investigating the wooden grate sealed with a talisman causes the Camera Obscura to react.

Photographing the grate reveals a Psychic Vision: The Opened Casket, hinting that the clue lies within a box.

Investigating the submerged box inside the room summons the hostile spirit Haruka Momose!

Defeating her yields the Iris Key Tag. Using it to unlock the wooden grate grants entry into the Watarai Residence.

渡會宅邸外觀

Stepping inside the Entrance Hall, they first take the upper-right stairs to the second floor.
Inside a room with a collapsed wall on the left side of the stairs, he spots a corridor trace: Keishi Watarai Lingering About.

The door at the end of the front section on the second floor is locked tight, forcing them to return to the first floor.

Walking down the central hallway and entering the room on the left reveals a corridor trace: Keishi Watarai Mutting to Himself.

Returning to the hallway and entering the room on the right rewards them with the document Folklorist's Journal 1 from a corner cabinet.

Returning to the hallway and reaching the telephone corner, the phone suddenly rings. Picking it up, Sakaki's voice says: 'It's too late. I'm already...' before cutting out completely.
Beneath the telephone table, Ren recovers the Photograph of a Bride.

Rui: 'Isn't this the photograph you saw that day, Master?'
Ren: 'Did Sakaki come here carrying this photograph too? Just like me...'

A new trace appears: Keishi Watarai Heading Deeper Inside.
Keishi Watarai: 'A marriage... ritual... with the deceased.'

Following it to the corner, they open the left door leading to the back staircase and ascend to the second floor.

Upon reaching the landing corridor, they see a trace: Keishi Watarai Drawn In.
Keishi Watarai: 'The photograph is calling out... the photograph... it's laughing... smiling...'

From a bookshelf in the corner behind the stairs, he collects the document Folklorist's Journal 3.

Opening the door into the Library, he uncovers the documents Folklorist's Journal 4 and Folklorist's Audio Tape 2 on a central bookshelf lane.

Stepping into the inner study reveals a trace: Keishi Watarai Lost in Thought.

On a stack of books near the left door, he collects Folklorist's Journal 2, and from the desk, he obtains Folklorist's Journal 5 and Folklorist's Audio Tape 1.

Passing through the right door of the study into the Storage Room, peering up at the ladder in the corner reveals the phantom entity of Keishi Watarai in the attic, yielding his final record: Folklorist's Journal 6.

Ren: 'Kunihiko Asao... Dr. Asao is connected to this as well?'

Suddenly, thick miasma fills the room; sensing the danger, they decide to escape immediately.
Retracing their steps back to the first floor's rear staircase, they find the corridor door slammed shut by an immense force.

Opening the right door leads into the Buddhist Altar Room, where they are instantly ambushed by the hostile spirit Keishi Watarai. Upon defeating him, Ren touches the spirit, gaining a glance into Watarai's final memories:

In a long corridor, Keishi Watarai creeps forward, whispering: 'I've finally made it. Deep inside this house, she is waiting for me. I must hurry to greet her...'
As he approaches the door, it opens on its own.

Inside stands the bride from the photograph, who suddenly morphs into a black-robed wraith...

Keishi Watarai instantly turns to flee... but is dragged kicking into the darkness...

At the spot where Watarai was defeated, Ren collects Folklorist's Journal 7 and Folklorist's Audio Tape 3.

Opening the next door, the hostile spirit Kyozo Kanamoki bursts inside from the exterior to attack. After exterminating him, looking out toward the massive tree outside reveals a specter: Tall Woman.

Returning to the Entrance Hall, they are ambushed by a Casket Woman spirit. Defeating her allows them to exit the residence, only to watch the entire estate dissolve entirely into the thick mist. They follow the trail back to the station.

Location: Unveiled Forest Station

Rui: 'Was that... the folklorist, Keishi Watarai?'
Ren: 'Yeah.'
Rui: 'Something terrible is unfolding on this mountain, isn't it?'
Ren: 'I don't know.'
Rui: 'Is Mr. Sakaki on this mountain too? Just like that folklorist?'
Ren: 'Drop it.'

The two board the train and return home.

Epilogue

Following the clues from a single videotape, Ren journeyed to the Watarai Residence.

At the Doll Shrine along the path, he encountered a white-haired girl—the very girl who haunts Ren's dreams every night.

'Why didn't you bring my token...?'
With these words, the girl vanished into thin air.

Within the Watarai Residence, which had become a veiled house, lay numerous research records concerning the rituals of Mt. Hikami.

Once Ren and Rui managed to escape its confines, the estate dissolved entirely back into the mist.
