Huainanzi: Chu Zhen Xun

From Wuji to All Things: The Origin of the Universe

The Underlying Logic of Cosmic Genesis

The 'Chu Zhen Xun' explores the deepest origins of the universe. Before any metaphysical systems could take effect, how did the universe give birth to 'All Things' from 'Nothingness'? Understanding this evolutionary chain is the master key to Eastern mysticism.

Cross-Disciplinary Feature: Singularity and Quantum Fluctuations in Cosmology

The philosophy of 'Wuji generating Taiji' coincides perfectly with modern cosmology's 'Big Bang Theory'. Wuji is equivalent to the 'Singularity' before the Big Bang, possessing neither space nor time; Taiji represents the exact moment of cosmic inflation, where matter and antimatter (Yin and Yang) were born from the fluctuations of the quantum vacuum. This proves that Eastern philosophy possessed a highly dimensional intuition for astrophysics more than two thousand years ago.

Living in the Present

All living beings can be divided into Yin and Yang: the body is Yin, the spirit is Yang. Take Zhuangzi's butterfly dream as an example: when you are a human, earnestly be a human; when you are a butterfly, earnestly be a butterfly. Only the present moment can be truly grasped.

To truly live in the present, one must let go of intellect, maintain a simple nature, and hold the 'Dao' in the heart. No matter where you are, you can handle anything with a posture as soft and adaptable as water. As long as the Dao is in your heart, you can navigate any situation effortlessly.

Do not be restricted by trivial worldly matters; persistently move toward your goals.

Clear Mirror, Still Water

Modern Translation: Clear Mirror, Still Water, and the Brain's 'SNR'

The Huainanzi emphasizes that the mind should be like a 'clear mirror' and 'still water'. Explained through modern information science, this is the pursuit of the optimal 'Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR)' for the brain's computing system. When we are disturbed by worldly desires, the system's 'noise'—or 'Mental Entropy'—rises sharply, causing our interpretation of external signals to become distorted. Maintaining emptiness and tranquility is essentially an 'Active Noise Cancellation' system maintenance procedure, allowing you to sustain the most accurate decision-making computing power within complex social networks.

Mind (Xin): Thoughts, easily affected by desires, cannot leave the body.
Spirit (Shen): Influenced by the mind, but can leave the body.
The human heart must be like a clear mirror and still water, completely reflecting what it receives without projecting its own ideas.

All things in the world originate from either Being or Non-being.
Heaven - Dao (When Dao is lost, De arises)
Earth - De / Virtue (When De is lost, Benevolence arises)
Human - Benevolence & Righteousness (When Benevolence is lost, Righteousness arises; when Righteousness is lost, Rituals arise)

Benevolence and Righteousness are constructs for seeking fame; originally, they do not exist. Without the high, there is no low; without Yang, there is no Yin. Physically, people are mostly the same, but spirits vary greatly. A pure spirit is unaffected by desires and only does what is within its capability.

How to Possess a Pure Spirit?

  • Emptiness & Stillness (Xu Jing) - Eliminate all interference, resolve all contradictions, and demand harmony in all aspects.
  • Detachment (Tian Dan) - Indifferent to fame and fortune.
  • Solitude (Ji Mo) - Peaceful and solitary.
  • Non-action (Wu Wei) - Flowing leisurely with the objective changes of things.
💡 However, even if one fully understands the 'Dao', it cannot be fully utilized if faced with a poor macro-environment.
