Overview of the 28 Mansions and 5 Palaces
The 28 Mansions System:
- Purple: Ziwei Enclosure (Center)
- North: Big Dipper (Emperor's Chariot)
- Azure Dragon (East): 7 Green Mansions
- White Tiger (West): 7 White Mansions
- Vermilion Bird (South): 7 Red Mansions
- Black Tortoise (North): 7 Blue Mansions
| Palace | Element / Mythical Beast | Mansions |
|---|---|---|
| Central | Earth / Purple Palace | Ziwei Enclosure, Big Dipper |
| East | Wood / Azure Dragon | Jiao, Kang, Di, Fang, Xin, Wei, Ji |
| South | Fire / Vermilion Bird | Jing, Gui, Liu, Xing, Zhang, Yi, Zhen |
| West | Metal / White Tiger | Kui, Lou, Wei, Mao, Bi, Zi, Shen |
| North | Water / Black Tortoise | Dou, Niu, Nü, Xu, Wei, Shi, Bi |
4,500 years ago, people believed 'Ecliptic = Equator'. Thus, the 28 Mansions were arranged along the equator centered on Ziwei. Later, due to the discovery of precession, the 'Three Enclosures' system was formally established in the Tang Dynasty to maintain astronomical balance.
In Sima Qian's 'Book of Celestial Offices' (Han Dynasty), the Three Enclosures were not yet mentioned. Instead, the sky was divided into Five Palaces.
Central Palace: Purple Palace
前列直斗口三星... 若見若不,曰陰德紅5...
紫宮左三星曰天槍,右五星曰天棓紅4...
Big Dipper: Emperor's Chariot
斗魁戴匡六星曰文昌宮紅2... 在斗魁中,貴人之牢紅1...
杓端有兩星:一內為矛,招搖紅3;一外為盾,天鋒。
Analysis: The 'Records' was written around 100 BC, over 1300 years before the Suzhou star map. Discrepancies between the text and the map are entirely reasonable.
East Palace: Azure Dragon
The heart of the Azure Dragon. The brightest star in the middle is Antares, the main star worshipped by the Shang Dynasty.
The dragon's belly. The ecliptic passes through here.
Arcturus was once part of Jiao. It is the celestial gate where the sun, moon, and five planets must pass.
Kang: Blue 1 Governs illness.
Di: Blue 3 Governs epidemics.
Wei: Blue 4 Lord-vassal relations.
Ji: Blue 5 Slander and disputes.
South Palace: Vermilion Bird
The administrative center of heaven. Planets entering in retrograde often signaled ministerial rebellion.
Symbolizes the power of the Empress or Empress Dowager.
Where the Milky Way flows, governing water conservancy.
The eyes of the Vermilion Bird, governing sacrifices.
Liu: Red 6 Beak. Xing: Red 7 Throat, emergencies. Zhang: Red 8 Wings, guests. Yi: Red 9 Feathers, distant guests. Zhen: Red a Chariot, wind.
West Palace: White Tiger
Kui: Red 2 Ditches. Lou: Red 3 Gatherings.
Wei: Red 4 Granary. Mao: Red 5 Funerals.
Bi: Red 6 Hunting, border troops.
Shen: Red 7 Tiger body, warfare.
Zi: Red 8 Tiger head, military.
Beside Shen (Orion) is Sirius. Below it is Canopus. Its appearance signifies peace; its absence signals war.
North Palace: Black Tortoise
羽林天軍紅3... 北落若微亡,軍星動角益希...
Govern funerals, roofs, and fortifications. Fomalhaut is a key military indicator.
牽牛紅B為犧牲。
婺女紅C,其北織女。
The Big Dipper of the South and the Cowherd/Weaver Girl stars are located here.
The ancients observed the rising and setting of specific stars (such as Sirius and Canopus) to predict war and peace. In modern 'cultural astronomy', this is not superstition but a precise 'paleoclimatological indicator'. The visibility of certain celestial bodies is closely related to atmospheric transparency, humidity, and monsoon circulation of the time. Drastic changes in atmospheric conditions often herald the arrival of extreme weather (such as severe droughts or floods), which in turn trigger crop failures and social unrest (wars).
The records stating 'when a certain star trespasses a certain mansion, a specific disaster will occur' are actually early human 'Pattern Recognition' of big data. Ancient royal astronomers compared hundreds of years of astrometric trajectories with massive datasets of earthquakes, plagues, and regime changes on Earth to compile statistical models with the highest probability of occurrence. This astrological disaster warning system is essentially an ancient national-level 'risk assessment and disaster prediction database'.
